The AI model release cycle continues: On Thursday, OpenAI released GPT-5.5 and GPT-5.5 Pro. The new model is, unsurprisingly, its most capable model yet, reports Frederic Lardinois, Senior Editor for AI.
GPT-5.5 will be available to all paying OpenAI users in ChatGPT and Codex, while GPT-5.5 Pro will be rolling out to Pro, Business, and Enterprise users in ChatGPT only. It will be available in the API soon (but will also be more pricey than before).
After Anthropic launched Opus 4.7 a week ago, it was only a matter of time before OpenAI would follow suit — and, at least according to the benchmarks we’ve seen so far, GPT-5.5 and 5.5 Pro handily beat Opus 4.7 across most of today’s standard benchmarks.
On a press call ahead of the launch, OpenAI president and co-founder Greg Brockman described GPT-5.5 as “a new class of intelligence. It’s a big step towards more agentic and intuitive computing.”
