It’s the first time OpenAI has launched new mini and nano models in a while, writes Senior Editor for AI Frederic Lardinois. (The last release was GPT-5 mini and nano in 2025.)
What’s especially interesting, Lardinois writes, is that the trade-off between mini and the full GPT-5.4 isn’t even that steep in some areas — particularly on coding and computer-use benchmarks — all while running more than twice as fast, according to OpenAI. Nano is the stripped-down option for high-volume work: classification, data extraction, ranking, and lightweight coding support. Both are available now.
